Although a relatively small resort, Klong Muang has a great selection of dining options and there is no need to travel into Ao Nang for a great meal. Klong Muang is (for now) a small resort, boasting five star hotels such as the Sheraton Krabi and the Nakamanda to name just two. Most of these hotel complexes provide high-class and thus highly-priced food. We chose to dine where flip flops, jeans and shorts were allowed. The selection of restaurants we have chosen to review were all reasonably priced where a meal for two (including one alcoholic beverage each) costs between 500-700 THB.
Our favourite eatery by far was Sabai Ba Restaurant and Bar. Located right in the centre of the Klong Muang beach area, it is situated on the beach-front opposite the new Pelican apartment complex (still in the process of being built). We dined at Sabai Ba on four separate occasions and were never disappointed. Offering a mouthwatering selection of Thai dishes, all surpassing our expectations, along with western dishes for those wanting a ‘taste of home’. With very reasonable prices, it became our ‘regular’ during our ten day stay in Klong Muang.
With numerous advertising boards (including Trip Advisor reviews and scores) dotted around the area, The Coconut Restaurant certainly made its presence known. The menu is mainly Thai but also offers some Western-style food. Our food was okay, nothing to complain about, but not a patch on any plate we ate at Sabai Ba. Very friendly and accommodating staff made up for the average food, but this wasn’t quite enough to encourage us to return.
Mother House (Original Thai-food and Seafood) is located roadside, on the corner turn just before Klong Muang beach. We dined here twice, finding the service to be a little slow, yet friendly with good food. They did not stock spy wine cooler (my choice of drink in Thailand, as a non-beer drinker), but was told I could purchase one from the shop next door and ‘bring my own’ (33 THB for one at the Smile Mini mart) and no ‘corkage’ fee. The décor is simple and looks far prettier at night with soft lighting – reasonable food at a good price.
The Beach House restaurant is located further down the Klong Muang beach, past the Pelican complex and just over the bridge. With outside seating on a lawn overlooking the beach, it is a great place to sip on a cocktail as the sun sets. Our dining experience at The Beach House was mixed, as my partners stir fried chicken and vegetables was below average, yet my fresh squid stuffed with minced pork with a creamy curry sauce was very tasty indeed. Slow service and disinterested staff, along with a pricey, yet very small glass of wine, only served to re-enforce our view that The Beach House may look great, but both the food and service were rather average.
If you’re happy to go for a little wander, there is a wonderful fresh fruit stall located just past the At Sea Condo’s on the way to Klong Muang village. The local Thai ladies were incredibly friendly and sold the best fruit in the area. Each day, after a swim in the sea, I would head up to these ladies and purchase whatever took my fancy for the day, from fresh pineapple, juicy mangos and local bananas to sapodilla and mangosteen. A healthy and cheap snack option along with a chance to practise your Thai and taste some exotic fruits.
